] [ The Daily Linux News] [ Previous] [ Next] Linux Gazette December Issue Out NowThat's right folks, the latest issue is out now. Red Hat Guns For MicrosoftThey just keep getting bigger and bigger! Red Hat plans to make a major investment in Mozilla, and is in close negotiations with Sendmail. You can be sure Microsoft are paying close attention to every move Red Hat make. Do It Yourself SupercomputingEver fancied building your own supercomputer? The Bash Reference CardHere's a handy Bash reference card available in PDF format. Red Hot: Red Hat LinuxA quick summarisation of this whole 'Linux IPO' thing the online press have been getting so excited about. Who's taken the leap, who hasn't, and who's about to? This article will reveal all. Microsoft vs. LinuxA superb article that consisely takes us through why Linux can't fail, and why Microsoft will fail. Intel And Apax Invest 12 Million In SuSENot content with just investing in Red Hat, Intel are to invest in SuSE. SuSE are confident this will be instrumental in SuSE's expansion and IPO efforts. Red Hat Eyes Handheld MarketIt's not just desktop and server versions Windows, Red Hat is taking on. It's now time to show Windows CE a thing or two. M$-Monopoly.comOuch! Q&A With Darren Starr: Lead Programmer Of The Opera For Linux Port QT EditionHere's the latest on the much anticipated beta release of the Opera browser for Linux. Ed, Man! !Man EdGNU has put together a humour section on their site. Most of it is nothing more than a waste of bandwidth, but there was the one article I liked, and this is it. Quake III Arena Demo Test Released For LinuxThe third installment of one of the greatest games ever, comes to Linux, in the form of a demo test. It's available to download from id Software's site, in both tar.gz and RPM (both 50Mb). Now They're All Singing The Penguin Mating Call...A "good-read" osOpinion piece. The author accuses the big news websites of quickly changing their tune towards Linux (i.e. hypocritical 'suits' with no real vision). Good Things On The HorizonA great little article about what we can expect from the imminent release of the 2.4 kernel. Sun Wants To 'Community Source' EverythingHere's the reason why I don't have much time for Sun. Their products might run on Linux -- but they're most certainly not Linux. And whilst I may talk about them on the site, they'll not be installed on my Linux box for more than 5 minutes, for a "quick look". And all other companies that release software that is not GPL, receive the same treatment. Our operating system will never become Windows -- not if I have anything to do with it. KDE 2.0 In ActionHere's a page that's been put together to tell you what you can expect from KDE 2.0, along with tons of the all-important screenshot. Build A Useful Five-Headed PenguinFor those that don't know about VMware, it lets you run up to 5 operating systems simultaneously from the 1 Linux or NT box. It's not an emulator either; you're actually running up to 5 operating systems at once! It's just a shame it's not free -- although on the bright side, the trial version can be downloaded from VMware's site, and it's only 3.5Mb. You'll also need a powerful system to run it -- but that's perfectly understandable. For more information, take a read of this LinuxWorld article. Linux Certification Body Announces Completion Of First ExamThe Linux Professional Institute (LPI) announced today the completion of its first exam and its global deployment within the next few weeks. Their site has an exam objectivespage, where you can find out more. "And Crusoe Is Its Name-O"Details of what Transmeta (the highly secretive company that Linus works for) have been getting up to. Basically it's a revolutionary CPU they call Crusoe, that can do all sorts of fancy things. Comdex: Torvalds Emphasizes User InputA summary of Linux Torvalds speech, on the second day of Comdex -- the world's largest computer industry trade show. GNOME Author Starts Linux Office Software CompanyA little article about Miguel de Icaza (head programmer for the GNOME project, and author of Gnumeric) setting up his own company to create a suite of free office applications for Linux. The good news is that he expects to have the first batch of applications ready for March 2000. Red Hat Buys Software Firm, Shuffles CEOThis is the story everyone's talking about. Red Hat buys Cygnus. Corel Launches Desktop LinuxAn good article detailing the eagerly anticipated release of Corel Linux -- the distribution dubbed, "as easy to use as Windows". The Tale Of The Gratuitous GUIJoe Barr over at LinuxWorld is not impressed with Red Hat's new graphical install, or its unfriendliness towards KDE. Drilling Deeper Into Torvalds's TransmetaTransmeta is the super-secretive company that Linus works for. Being super-secretive, there's naturally a lot of folk out there with a burning curiosity. If you're one of them this article will help. More PC Makers Bypass Main Comdex EventsNot really much to do with Linux this, but Comdex isthe largest computer industry trade show in the world, and it kicks off next week in Las Vegas (lasting for 7 days). This article features loads of news about the tons of computer-related things expected at the show. Bill Speaks On Integration, Lawyering And LinuxBill Gates speaks his usual tripe at a meeting with shareholders. Course the thing that makes this article interesting is that it comes days after the Finding of Fact. Read what he has to say here. The Open Source BuzzSo what do the Open Source leaders think of the Microsoft ruling? Find out here in this excellent read. Coriolis Publishes Red Hat Linux Exam CramThis certainly sounds interesting. A book designed to get you through the Red Hat Certified Engineer exam (RHCE 300). Red Hat, Oracle To Promote Beefed Up Linux VersionRed Hat are working to make Red Hat Linux better suited to e-commerce, and Oracle ("the notoriously anti-Microsoft database giant") will help promote the version. Intended improvements include: software to run Java programs, the ability to address larger amounts of memory, a "journaling file system" to help Linux computers recover from crashes faster, and an update to Linux to get it to run on Intel's upcoming 64-bit chips. Naturally this will also include the joint promotion of the Oracle 8i database for Linux. The new version (6.2?) will be released in mid-December. (Personally I think they should call it Red Hat 6.x and leave version 7.0 until the soon to be released 2.4.x kernel has become established as "rock-stable".) The Road Ahead: What If Microsoft Stumbles?Ok so Microsoft wouldn't find this article amusing, but I did. Guaranteed to give you a chuckle or two. European Users React Calmly To Findings In Microsoft CaseA "good-read" article in which many European businessmen were asked what they thought of the Finding of Fact paper, with some important points made. The Post-Microsoft EraPhew, what can I say? One hell of an article. Despite doing his bit to spread the "I don't like Microsoft" message, this guy presents a veritable feast of evidence to back up his words. Then just when you're thinking, "I should almost be at the end of this article, it was a damn good read," he moves onto part 2 of the article with a wealth of information concerning the evolution, culture, and freedom of the Net -- geared towards the well-known fact that the "visionary" Bill Gates missed the boat when the initial growth of the Internet came along, and that perhaps the Internet has done, and will play a large part in the taking-down of the monopoly that is Microsoft. Cobalt IPO Hits Almost 500 PercentShares of Cobalt Networks Inc., the maker of a small, blue server-in-a-box, soared almost 500 percent in its initial public offering, making it the third biggest initial public offering ever. Oh and by the way: this site is powered by a Cobalt server! Judge Calls Microsoft A "Monopoly"U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson has this to say about everyone's favourite company: "Through its conduct toward Netscape, IBM, Compaq, Intel, and others, Microsoft has demonstrated that it will use its prodigious market power and immense profits to harm any firm that insists on pursuing initiatives that could intensify competition against one of Microsoft's core products." GNU/Linux And The Global VillageI've said it on many an occasion and so too has Bill. Our world could do with a little more niceness and a little less monopolising, greed, hatred et al. Perhaps the growth of Linux and its global community is a big step in the right direction. I think it is, and so does this guy. British Businesses Advised To Avoid LinuxA British security consultant gets the Linux community worked up with his 6 lame reasons for why British businesses should avoid Linux. Why the DVD Hack Was a Cinch. Corel Signs First OEM Deal For Corel LinuxCorel has arranged a deal, whereby a copy of Corel Linux, Corel Wordperfect 8 for Linux, and Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 OEM for Windows will be shipped with over 20 million PC Chips motherboards (one of the world's largest suppliers). Should just 5% decide to install Corel Linux there will be 1 million more Linux users worldwide from this deal alone! (Still not worried about Linux Bill?) Linux Kernel 2.4 UpdateAn excellent summary on what to expect from the soon to be released 2.4 kernel, presented in a non-technical manner. Definately worth a read. SuSE Linux 6.3 On DVD!SuSE Linux 6.3 - to be released in late November - will be the first ever Linux distro to be available on both CD-ROM and DVD!. Programmers Or Entrepreneurs? How can programmers possibly make money out of giving their software away for free?? Juancarlo Aņez over at Borland's Developer News tells you how. Open Source For Microsoft?Call me stupid if you will, but quite frankly this had never crossed my mind. And since I've read a great many Linux articles, and this is the first mention I've ever come across, it's obvious it hasn't crossed the minds of many others either. The "Article of the Week" for sure. Go read it. Red Hat Funds Open-Source Think TankWith its three largest shareholders (Marc Ewing, Bob Young, and Frank Batten) donating $8 million between them, and Marc Ewing taking on the role of Director -- it's clear Red Hat want to do their best to make this scheme work. Their intention through this scheme, is to promote awareness of Linux and its benefits to all walks of life. You know, the world of Linux never ceases to amaze me. Perhaps one day Linux will bring about World-Peace. Perhaps not, but you never can tell with these things. :) It certainly can't hurt to promote freedom of information and niceness over the dollar. Nothing Interesting to Report Very little happened today in the world of Linux, and what did happen was b-o-r-i-n-g. No point reporting yawnsville news just for the sake of a story, now is there? Unrelated to Linux, there was one interesting story, that many are talking about:
