] [ The Daily Linux News] [ Previous] [ Next] LWN 1999 Linux TimelineCheck out this impressive summary of the big Linux stories of 1999, either before, after, or during the process of getting dangerously drunk. ;) Linux Explodes Onto The SceneOn the final day of the year (not to mention, decade, century, and millenium!!) CNet sums up the main Linux events to take place over the last 12 months. Or as I like to call it, The Year of the IPO. Top Stories Of 1999 Cut Wide SwathNot exactly Linux (although mention is made of it), this article presents a good round-up of all the big-business mergers and acquisitions that took place in the computer world during 1999. Next Linux IPO No Sure ThingBesides more on the charlatans that call themselves LinuxOne, there's some good info here on the successes of all the previous Linux IPOs. LinuxOne Wastes Investors' Time, MoneyLinuxOne put simply are a fly-by-night cowboy operation hoping to cash in on the ignorant investor because their 'company' name has the word Linux in it. They are con-men, reviled by the Linux community, and every time I hear their name, my blood pressure goes up a point. This excellent article will serve-up all the nitty-gritty information you need to know on this sad scheme to make a fast buck. Good Samaritan Squashes Hotmail Lapse?Put simply: this story is hilarious, one of the funniest I've read all year. A must-read for sure. Opera For Linux Technology Preview 2 Available For DownloadIt's about time we had a decent browser for Linux, and I'm betting this will be it. Being a Techology Preview, there's still many incomplete features or features that don't work at all but for the curious - this will give you a taste of what to expect. Linux Smashes Bill's Windows - For FreeWith the much anticipated release of the 2.4 kernel intended for release on February 17th - the same day as the official release of Windows 2000 - will Linux steal W2K's thunder? An article aimed at an audience that heard the word Linux for the first time 'not yesterday', but a nice article all the same. The Linux Monkey On Microsoft's BackNot a great article, but it's all I could find. Are Microsoft sending out mixed signals about Linux, causing confusion amongst users? Id Software Releases Quake 1 Source Code Under The GPLHere's a great piece of news. Id Software have released the complete source code for WinQuake, GLQuake, QuakeWorld, and GLQuakeWorld under the GPL. Implementing E-Commerce On Your Linux SystemFor those curious about implementing an e-commerce solution using Linux, check out this article. Why pay big bucks for expensive Windows software, and then pay plenty more for someone to implement it, when you can do it all for free. Linux And BeOSA nice little article describing some similarities and differences between BeOS and Linux. Stephanie Chats With Uwe ThiemAn interview with a KDE developer, discussing amongst other things, what's planned for the release of KDE 2.0 (hopefully in July 2000). Eric S. Raymond Announces New Book In ProgressOpen Source guru Eric S. Raymond (ESR) announces his new book, The Art of Unix Programming. It's not finised yet, but he's put the contents page, preface, and chapter 1 on his site for feedback. Corel CEO Shills For Stock By Loving LinuxOuch! It's clear the author of this piece is no fan of Michael Cowpland, founder and CEO of Corel. In-depth Coverage Of The Future Of The Linux CommunityCoverage of the first night of the Bazaar in New York, where a panel discussion took place with some important points made. (You can find full coverage of The Bazaar here.) Sun Bows To The Inevitable - And Offers LinuxSun is to sell Red Hat Linux from its online store. Interesting when you consider Linux is technically a competitor to their operating system, Solaris. If you can beat them... join them. GNOME Developers InterviewFar too many things are covered in this interview with Miguel de Icaza to mention them here, but I can tell you it makes for an excellent read. Surprise! Linux Doesn't Cure CancerPat Dorsey over at MorningStar.com warns investors not to be taken in by the Linux hype, when buying shares. Boycott Amazon!Amazon has patented a simple and important e-commerce idea and has already taken Barnes and Noble to court over it, and won. Richard Stallman believes this is an attack against the freedom of our Web, that Amazon fully intend to monopolise it, and that the idiocy of the US Patent Office to grant the patent, leaves the door wide open for others to abuse their stupidity. Linuxcare To Get $32.5 Million In FundingThis is the biggest single-round investment a Linux company has ever received, proving yet once more that Linux is big business. "Underground, Fringe Operating System" Hmmm?A good article on the VA Linux, and Andover.net IPOs, and who else is to 'IPO', and when. Lego Tux!This is seriously kewl. Here's one guy with far too much free time on his hands. Will Red Hat Rule On High?A first class article with some excellent points made. As with many others it took me time to adjust to this whole Linux/Open Source thing, and there were many times I was dubious about how it would all turn out -- the Red Hat IPO being the main reason for concern. Even Red Hat were dubious about the whole thing to begin with. But the more you appreciate this new Open Source concept, the more you realise Red Hat (or anyone else) will never become, 'the next Microsoft'. Free Software Distribution in Protest of University of Michigan/Microsoft ContractHere's a great little story about students that are going to protest a university deal with software giant Microsoft by giving out free copies of Linux to students. Also if you check out their homepageyou'll find out about the many companies that will provide the protestors with tons of free Linux CDs. Red Hat alone are providing 500 CDs! VA Linux Storms Wall Street With 698 Percent GainOn their first day of trading, VA Linux shares broke the record with the highest ever increase in share-price on the first day of trading. Opera For Linux ScreenshotA screenshot of the eagerly anticipated Opera browser for Linux has finally been released on their site. At 75% complete and a beta due for release before Christmas it looks as if us penguins could soon have one more thing to shout about. The Linux Magazine Who's WhoA Linux Who's Who featuring a description and photo for 49 of the top Linux names. Worth a look for sure. (Is it just me or does Cliff Miller look like an Area 51 escapee?) The Linux LineupHere's a nice one for all you newbie's. CNet compares the 7 most popular Linux distros. Dell Servers Wear Red HatsA nice article about the increasing success of Red Hat. The bit about the author's uneasieness toward people's perception of Red Hat = Linux however, is in my opinion, nonsense. The Geek Of Christmas Present(s)A list of items us geeks would like to see in our 64-bit techno-stockings. Q&A: Michael TiemannAn excellent interview with Michael Tiemann -- co-founder of Cygnus Solutions, focussing on Cygnus' plans now that Red Hat have aquired them. Oh dear, things have been frustratingly quiet on the Linux front. Sure there's news, but it's all just a little too 'yawnsville' for my liking.
